Vortex Optics and News 3 Now launched the Spirit of Service Award to honor Wisconsin veterans who continue to serve their communities with integrity and selflessness. I was tasked with designing the official badge for the award—an emblem that would be seen on local television, worn as a patch, displayed on plaques, and used across digital and print platforms. The design needed to be unmistakably patriotic, visually dignified, and versatile across mediums.
-
This was more than just a logo—it was a symbol meant to carry emotional and ceremonial weight. The design had to resonate with veterans, represent national pride without resorting to clichés, and hold its presence across broadcast graphics, merchandise, signage, and formal award presentations. It needed to be visually powerful yet refined enough to stand among traditional military honors.

Patriotic Design Language
Drew inspiration from military medals, rank insignia, and classic American symbolism. The shield form conveys protection and valor, while thirteen stars and three stripes nod to the U.S. flag in a stylized, proprietary composition.Color & Typography
A deep navy and maroon palette was chosen to evoke heritage, sacrifice, and strength—avoiding bright red-white-blue for a more formal, lasting tone. Typography was set in a strong serif to convey honor and permanence.Symbolism & Structure
Every element was intentionally placed—the upward-facing pentagon subtly mirrors U.S. military command insignias. Balanced symmetry ensures the badge feels official, ceremonial, and timeless.Cross-Media Flexibility
The final design was tested and refined for embroidery, plaques, motion graphics, and social media. It retained clarity and meaning whether stitched, printed, or animated—ensuring it would scale with the award’s growing visibility.

The award reached thousands across Wisconsin, with hundreds of nominations submitted annually. The 2024 winner, Rob Drogsvold, used the $5,000 award to help renovate the Stoughton VFW.Veteran and Public Praise
The badge has been warmly received by veterans, families, and community members—recognized not just as a graphic, but as a symbol of honor and gratitude.
